Getting Started

For Students

  1. Sign in with your Google or Microsoft account, or open the app in Microsoft Teams. A quick tour shows you around the first time, and you can see it again in Settings
  2. Home shows your learning journeys and what comes next. Press Continue to carry on where you left off
  3. Open a journey's map from Word Lists: milestones of word lists to work through, one list at a time
  4. Use Practice for extra goes at any game, on your tricky words or any of your lists
  5. From Home, collect words in your Word Log and look words up in the dictionary or thesaurus
  6. Keep your day streak going and earn badges as you learn

For Teachers

  1. Sign in with your school account. A guided setup opens the first time: your school's details, your teacher tools and your first list, in about three minutes. Settings has it again, with a short tour of your tools
  2. On Lists, make your school's word lists (one at a time, or many at once from a CSV), choose the games for each, and place them on the milestones of your school's journey for each year group
  3. Give a list a date to open, and hide Atom 11+ or High Frequency Words from a year group if you wish
  4. On Class progress, see each pupil's progress on a journey, list by list, and open a pupil for the detail
  5. On Approvals, approve pupils who ask to join your school
  6. Use the Student | Teacher switch beside your name to see the app as your pupils do

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign in?

If you're using the app in Microsoft Teams, you'll be signed in with your Teams account. On the web, sign in with your Google or Microsoft account.

Do I need to sign in?

Yes. Signing in saves your progress, so your journeys, Word Log and badges are there on every device you use.

How do I create a word list?

Go to Word Lists → Your own custom lists, under your journeys. Give your list a name, add its words and choose the games to play it with, then press Practise on it. Your learning journeys are set for you, so your own lists sit beside them. Teachers make their school's lists on the Lists tab.

What is the Word Log?

The Word Log is your own collection of words: ones you meet in books, or find in the dictionary. For each word, write what it means and a sentence of your own, and our AI checks them for you. Emoji stories, silly sentences and word origins are there too, to help the word stick.

What are learning journeys?

A learning journey is a map of milestones, each with a few word lists. Open a list to play its games, and the list is done once every word is learnt in each one. Meet the words is there too, whenever you want to see each word's meaning and helpers. You may have your school's journey, set by your teachers, as well as Atom 11+ (words for the 11+ exam) and High Frequency Words (the words used most often in reading and writing). A milestone is completed once every list on it is done. Complete every milestone of Atom 11+ or High Frequency Words to earn that journey's trophy.

How does the Tile game work?

Build each word from letter tiles, with its meaning there to help. Every word starts at Learning. A right answer moves it up to Familiar and then Mastered, and a wrong answer moves it down a level; a hint does neither. The higher the level, the more letters you choose from. On a journey, a Tile game list is done once every word on it is Mastered.

Does Practice count towards my journeys?

No. Practice is for extra goes on any of your words, and it keeps your tricky words up to date: get a tricky word right and it comes off your tricky list, get one wrong and it goes on. Your journeys move on only when you play them from the journey map. Practice still counts towards your day streak.

Is my data safe?

Yes. We use industry-standard security including HTTPS encryption, secure authentication, and encrypted database storage. We never sell your data. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Is the app free?

Yes, Vocabulary Builder is completely free for students, teachers, and schools.

How do I sign up my school?

If you'd like to bring Vocabulary Builder to your school, you can register your interest via the banner on the Settings page. Once registered, we'll review your details and come back to you with further information when we're ready to onboard the next round of schools. There's no commitment required at this stage — it simply lets us know you're interested.

What devices does it work on?

Vocabulary Builder works on any device with a web browser - desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. It's fully responsive and optimized for Microsoft Teams on all platforms.

Can I use it offline?

The app requires an internet connection to fetch word definitions and sync your progress.
